Handheld 200 W Class 4 Pulsed Laser for Hoist Sheave Wheel NDE Preparation
Objective: Prepare surface for Magnetic Particle Testing (Mag PT) while minimizing operational downtime.
Background:
Traditional surface prep for NDE inspections involved media blasting, which required significant setup, containment, and cleanup time. Given that the hoist is critical to mine operations, a faster, precise, and low-impact method was required to maintain operational continuity.
Methodology:
Surface Cleaning: Heavy grease and contaminants were initially removed using a high-strength industrial degreaser.
Laser Preparation: A 200W portable Class 4 pulsed laser was used to remove surface coatings, providing a clean substrate suitable for Mag PT. The laser enabled precise, controlled ablation without damaging the underlying metal.
Safety Measures: Operator PPE and localized containment were employed to capture particulates. The system minimized airborne debris compared to media blasting.
Results:
Surface prep time was reduced significantly compared to conventional methods.
Minimal operational downtime, allowing the hoist to return to service quickly.
High-precision prep ensured effective Mag PT results.
